UK-based retail group Marks & Spencer (M&S) will open its first store in the country on 2 October, as the group looks to further establish itself on the international market.

The 4,180m2 store is located on Nanjing Road West in Shanghai, one of the leading shopping areas in the country.

The site was formerly occupied by the Wings department store, and will boast a range of food, clothes and homeware items across four floors, Reuters said.

Although the retailer has not revealed plans about future openings in China, it is set to add to its nine stores in Hong Kong with a store opening in the near future.

The group has focused a large amount of recent attention on the growth markets of Asia, having also agreed a deal with Reliance Retail to expand in India.
