The first commercial-scale vertical farm has opened in Singapore and is expected to produce some 500kg of vegetables each day.

Sky Green Farms has developed the facility that consists of 120 aluminium towers, each of which is 9m tall. It will produce around 500kg of three types of vegetables to be sold by domestic supermarket chain, FairPrice Finest.

Channel News Asia reported vertically grown produce is extremely popular despite being more expensive than produce grown using conventional techniques. As such Sky Green Farms is seeking investment to expand the facility and increase production to around 2 tonnes per day.

'We are always looking at ways to increase our sources of food supply and if we can produce some in Singapore, then that can go some way to meet local demand,' Lee Yi Shyan, senior minister of state for national development and trade and industry, told the news service.
