Typhoon Jangmi began rolling over Taiwan on Sunday, the third such typhoon in recent weeks and with another two possible typhoons lurking off the coast.
The storm killed two and injured 61, reported the Taipei Times yesterday, and caused an estimated NT$318m (US$9.87m) of damage to the country’s agricultural sector.
Fruit and vegetable prices rose as a result, averaging NT$38.7 per kg across Taiwan and NT$41.39 per kg in Taipei City.
Bananas, persimmons and corn were hit hard, said the Council of Agriculture, and leafy vegetables suffered significant losses. The price of water spinach rose 60 per cent to NT$70 per kg, and bok choy hit NT$80.
Farmers in Miaoli County, one of the worst hit areas, qualified for the Agricultural Natural Disaster Relief subsidies, according to the Council.
