India brinjal eggplant

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Commerce has announced its intention to ban the export of green chilli, eggplant, cucumber and coriander seven days in advance of Ramadan, the Dhaka Tribune reports.

Commerce secretary Mahbub Ahmed told the local media that the ban was intended to ensure consistent supply of these essential items during the Islamic holy month.

The ban may continue for a minimum of one month as demand for these products increases during Ramadan, according to Commerce Ministry sources, who state that these kind of measures are imposed every year.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calender, will commence on 9 July in 2013, making the ban due to come into force on 2 July.
