Pakistan kinnows on tree

Pakistan's fresh fruit and vegetable exports enjoyed a bumper year in 2012/13, according to new figures from the country's agricultural department.

A spokesperson told local media that export value had jumped from US$538m (€407m) in 2011/12 to US$625m (€473m), thanks to the 'quality of fruit and vegetables which have attracted foreign buyers'.

The 2012/13 figure included record exports of potatoes, onions and kinnow, the spokeperson suggested.

However, the spokesperson said that there was still a need to improve the quality of production to meet stringent international standards, particularly as new varieties were introduced, while adding that continued education and training of farmers was required.
