Vietnamese fruit exports to China rose sharply for the first 11 months of 2013, according to a report in the Global Times.

China now accounts for 27.8 per cent of Vietnam’s total fruit exports.

During this 11-month period, exports to China generated close to US$262m in value, comprising a year-on-year increase of 36.4 per cent.

The figure was released by the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association on Tuesday 10 December.

The marked rise in exports was attributed to increased processed fruit items shipped to the Chinese market, where dried fruit products from Vietnam are highly sought after.

While fruit is on the rise, vegetables are still Vietnam’s primary fresh produce export to China.

In the first 11 months of the year, vegetable exports to China generated US$675m in revenue for the Vietnamese industry, an increase of 24.2 per cent year-on-year, according to Vietnam’s General Statistics Office.

Vietnam’s combined fruit and vegetable exports to China were therefore worth US$937m for this period.

The country has set a target of US$1bn in revenue for the year.
