Bangladesh has banned exports of six vegetable products during Ramadan to ensure adequate supplies for the domestic market over the holy month, reports bdnews24.com.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed announced yesterday (25 June) that an export ban on eggplant, garlic, cucumber, green chilli, lemon and coriander leaves will remain in place until 31 July.
Ahmed said the government was trying to secure domestic supplies and check price rises.
'We want to ensure that prices of essentials remain within the people's reach,' he is reported as saying.
Ahmed warned against trying to create artificial crisis or raising prices of essentials saying 'stern legal measures' would be taken to foil any such attempts. The minister said the government had taken 'special measures' to ensure a normal supply and prices of onion.
Local traders told the publication that many were stockpiling vegetables ahead of the Ramadan.
