Peru’s fruit industry could be one of the main beneficiaries of plans by the Andean nation and China to strengthen cooperation under the auspices of the two countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to a report in Andina, during a bilateral meeting between Peruvian president Ollanta Humala and Chinese premier Xi Jinping, which took place under the auspices of the Sixth annual BRICs summit in Fortaleza, Brazil yesterday, the leaders pledged to improve economic and trade cooperation in a number of areas, including agriculture, trade, energy and the expansion of mutual investment.
Speaking after the meeting, the two leaders pledged mutual support in removing technical barriers to exports and stated that they were keen to speed up trade and expand mutual investment between the two countries, in particular focusing on value added products.
China and Hong Kong are Peru’s second and third biggest fruit markets after the US, accounting for US$38m and US$36m of exports respectively.
