Polish apples

Polish apples are now available in Singapore for the first time ever, the Straits Times reports.

The apples went on sale at seven Singapore FairPrice Xtra supermarkets on 22 November at a discounted price of S$4.25 per kg, the Polish Embassy in Singapore said.

The Embassy was involved in promoting the fruit around the city-state.

Polish apple exports to Singapore come after Russia, which bought 56 per cent of its apple exports last year, banned EU produce in retaliation against Western sanctions imposed following the Ukraine crisis.

Polish ambassador in Singapore Zenon Kosiniak-Kamysz said: 'The ban is one of the reasons we have to reconsider our export strategy, but it is not the only reason. Our government has ambitious plans to expand exports overseas.'

Talks are underway to export Polish carrots, onions and potatoes to Singapore, the report said.
