Fernando Antonio Nava Aguilar, director of the Vegetables and Ornamentals department of the Ministry of Rural Development (Seder) in Jalisco, says the state's latest figured showed it is exporting more than 90 per cent of the berries that it produces.
According to the publication Notimex, he outlines that Jalisco ranks first in the production of berry crops that are almost exclusively for export, via different protected agriculture techniques.
He also says Jalisco has about four thousand hectares devoted to berries under protected agriculture.
'It depends on the crop, some are cultivated in macro-tunnels, others in micro-tunnels, or greenhouses, as the level of technology varies,' notes Aguilar.
He adds that Jalisco is a leader in Mexican blueberry production, as it produces 55 per cent of the blueberry volumes nationwide.
Nava Aguilar explained that 90 per cent of the blueberry production was exported to USA, Canada and Japan, and that Jalisco was starting to send it to the Asian market, specifically to China and Korea.
