Indian mango prices are unlikely to spike this season, despite increased export opportunities for the offering, according to Arvind Morde, a wholesaler-exporter based in Mumbai’s Crawford Market.
The EU’s decision to reopen market access to Indian Alphonso mangoes late last year prompted fears that there would be less fruit allocated to the domestic market, thereby increasing prices. However, Morde said increasing mango production and falling fuel prices would ensure consumers would continue to benefit.
“'Prices are not going to go up compared to last year,' Morde told DNA India. 'In Maharashtra, mango cultivation is increasing year after year, and growers are happy to switch over from other crops.”
