Dole banana trophy

Dole Japan's banana trophy was awarded to 200 runners at the 2014 Tokyo marathon

No stranger to blending fruit and technology, Dole Japan is once again ahead of the game with the world’s first edible wearable to be launched at the Tokyo marathon on 22 February.

Two out of the 30,000 runners in the marathon will sport Dole’s wearable banana – a still-fit-for-consumption banana with built-in LED lights that display running time, record heart rate and show encouraging messages from Twitter. It also lets the runner know when its time to refuel, most likely on the bananas supplied by Dole for the event.

Ahead of the marathon, Dole has launched a dedicated website and video, showing sensors and LED lights being inserted under the banana's skin before being stitched up again.

Dole has sponsored the marathon since 2008, year-on-year becoming increasingly innovative in its campaigns. Last year, Dole provided personalised banana trophies, printing runners’ statistics and messages of congratulations on bananas for 200 runners.
