Chile Port of Valparaiso

Asoex has expressed its growing frustration at the latest indefinite strike called by workers at the port of Valparaíso.

Terminal Pacífico Sur Valparaíso (TPS), who manages Terminal 1 at port announced that from 11am on Monday operations at the terminal would be suspended due to the walkout by around 500 stevedores in protest at what they claim are a number of outstanding issues that have yet to be properly addressed by the port authority, Empresa Portuaria Valparaíso. The action is said to be affecting all of the port’s operations.

Asoex has demanded urgent action from the government to resolve the situation, which it claims is endangering fruit exports as it means that companies are unable to fulfil their commercial commitments and that some US-bound shipments will clash with the Marketing Order system that will affect its marketability.

“It is incomprehensible that the parties involved are not able to find an adequate solution to a problem that has been simmering for several weeks and which is once again affecting the fruit export industry,” president Ronal Bown said in a statement, adding that the current action provided further proof that port institutions should be overhauled to prevent the situation from recurring.
