Myanmar's fresh produce trade is still dominated by wetmarkets

Myanmar convenience store chain ABC Group has announced plans to expand its presence in the South East Asian nation.

With 100 stores in Yangon and Mandalay, ABC Group has said its keen to explore international partnerships to expand its into new formats including supermarkets and hypermarkets, according to the Bangkok Post.

“Myanmar’s retail business is in the beginning stage. Therefore, it has huge potential to grow,” ABC Group MD Wai Thit Lwin said. “Modern trade contributes only 10 per cent of total retail sales currently and is expected to rise to 25 per cent by 2020.”

Over the coming five years, the retailer plans to expand to more than 1,000 stores through franchising.
