Heavy monsoon rains in and around Coimbatore, southern India, are damaging crops and pushing up local prices, reports the Times of India.

Vegetable prices in the region soared 15-30 per cent last week (7 November) due to supply shortages, the paper said.

Heavy rain on 1 November hit crops like tomatoes and small onions, limiting volumes available for wholesale markets in Coimbatore.

Farmers told the Times of India that fruit crops were also damaged by the monsoons.
