India has issued a revision of its policy on apple imports after restricting trade to a single port in September 2015.
Apples can now be imported through both sea and airports in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Cochin; through land and airports in Delhi; and through India’s land borders.
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry Department issued the amendment on 12 January, revising the previous policy that stated apples could only be imported into India through the Nhava Sheva Port in Maharashtra.
According to the Business Standard, eight Chennai-based importers had filed a petition to overturn the previous policy, arguing that restricting trade to the Nhava Sheva Port disadvantaged importers outside of Maharashtra.
The importers argued that adverse weather conditions had affected local apple supplies, meaning imports of apples were a necessity.
