Vietnam will pursue a plan to improve the international competitiveness of its agricultural sector, focusing on staple crop development and expansion of high-value crops like fruit and cashews, according to VietNamNet.

The country is the world’s third largest rice exporter, and will maintain this position by expanding rice production in the Red River and Mekong delatas, along with vegetables and beans. Advanced farming technology will also play a part.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will also expand production of high-value export crops such as coffee, cashews, tea and fruit.

The Ministry plans to invest in irrigation infrastructure in the midland, mountainous and Central Highland areas.

Vietnam’s agricultural exports rose in value 42.7 per cent over the last nine months to hit US$6.8bn.
