  11. 7. Three of big names in German retailing proved that a commitment to selling great quality fresh produce and offering good service in store can reap rewards in terms of reputation. Voted by shoppers themselves, Globus, Edeka and Lidl all scooped this year's Fruchthandel Retail Award in their respective categories.

Managing director Mark O’Sullivan revealed the company has a raft of new products in development, including a range of plantain crisps under an as-yet-undecided brand name.

  36. 27. Certification standard GlobalGAP revealed that, in a year when its Version 5 became mandatory, 2016 saw the global number of fruit and vegetable growers under its certification increase by 9.5 per cent to 168,060.
  37. 28. Pakistan is positioning itself to become a US$1bn fresh fruit exporter within the next five years, and will one day be a strategic fresh produce import hub, says Waheed Ahmed, chairman of Pakistan's fruit and vegetable export and import authority PFVA.
