Convenience is a key driver behind the growing popularity of kiwiberries in the US market, according to Daniel Newport of leading importer Pinnacle Fresh USA.

“There is no surprise the kiwiberry category is quickly growing, they’re such a convenient & versatile piece of fruit,” Newport explained. “We pack in 4.4-ounce (125g) clamshells making them perfect for school lunches or as a snack at the office. Kiwiberry enthusiasts can also enjoy them in smoothies, cocktails, salads & entrees.”

Pinnacle Fresh supplies the US market with fresh kiwiberries grown in New Zealand’s picturesque Bay of Plenty region.

While the fruit’s moniker has traditionally been “baby kiwifruit,” Newport said kiwiberry sales are strongest when merchandised alongside the rest of the berry category.

“Their bright green colour compliments the display perfectly drawing more people into the growing category,” Newport adds.

Pinnacle Fresh will begin importing the first New Zealand-grown kiwiberries of the season this week, with retailers reportedly excited to take advantage of the six-week programme.

The company’s QC and account manager, Jordan Dunlap, said it was working closely with its New Zealand suppliers to ensure the season is a success.

“All shipments are sent via air on a direct flight from NZ to Los Angeles where they are distributed to customers around the country. In conjunction with Produce Partners NZ, we are excited to be working together on providing the best kiwiberries to the US market.”
