Queensland fruit fly (Q-fly) has been discovered in the Adelaide suburb of West Hindmarsh, with biosecurity officers moving quickly to contain the outbreak.
A 1.5km outbreak area has been established around the detection point, with strict restrictions applying in a wider quarantine zone covering 14 suburbs.
The outbreak is the first to occur in South Australia since 2016. Biosecurity South Australia executive director, Will Zacharin, said Monday’s (8 January) discovery has had no immediate impact on the state’s fruit fly free status.
“An organic bait spotting programme will be undertaken with staff also concentrating on the removal of fallen fruit from properties within the affected 200m outbreak zone area,” Zacharin explained.
