The Washington Apple Commission (WAC) has advanced its search for a new president following a preliminary review by the group's search committee, according to interim president Ken Severn.

Mr Severn said that the board hopes to have candidates available to review at an upcoming meeting after successfully identifying some potential candidates. 'We will be reviewing our situation at our 3 December meeting,' he told The Packer.

'That's moving pretty fast. We're optimistic and hopeful that we'll fill the position by the first of the year, but that's not a promise,' he said. 'We want to find a person that will carry the industry forward.'

Mr Severn has filled the role of interim president since the WAC placed former president Dave Carlson on Administrative leave in July.

In its latest storage reports, the WAC forecast the 2008/09 applecrop to jump 10 per cent on the previous year, with a record 108.9mboxes (2.075m tonnes) expected to be packed this season.
