Mallee in southern Australia is the location of the largest pomegranate farm in the country, and is currently under development with the aim of boosting national exports destined for international markets.

The site, which is located at Wanbi, has an underground water license to irrigate 300ha of pomegranates, according to ABC Rural.

There is already a very established market throughout Europe, the US and the highly developed parts of Asia,' said Malcolm Lewis, director for Pomegranates Australia. 'It's been a staple food for many of those countries for thousands of years, and it's very well accepted.'

Mr Lewis added that he felt there was enough global demand for the fruit to see it ride out the current global economic crisis.
