Marks & Spencer (M&S) has revealed that the managing director of its China operations has left the company just three months after launching its first mainland store in Shanghai.

Despite a number of problems at the store since its opening, including supply problems in the food department and mixed reviews from customers, the group emphasised that Mr Sweet's departure was simply down to cut-backs.

According to the Financial Times, M&S said that Mr Sweet was just one of a small number of senior people who are leaving from the group's head office.

'We have reviewed our senior structure across the M&S business to ensure that we have the most efficient structure in place,' the group said in a statement.

The group's Hong Kong chief Simeon Piasecki has been handed the role of managing director for M&S greater China, and will oversee the group's continued expansion in the region.
