California’s strawberry growers predicted a record harvest last year, and according to new data released by the California Farm Bureau Federation that forecast has come true at 1.7bn pounds (771m kg) of fruit.

The 2008 harvest beat the previous record set in 2007 by 77m pounds (34.9m kg), reported the Sacramento Bee.

Increased acreage was largely responsible for the rise in 2008 production, the California Strawberry Commission reported last year.

The state is not resting on its laurels for the coming season, however, with growers indicating plans to expand the area under production.

California produces strawberries all year round, and so far this year the state has harvested 74.7m pounds (33.9m kg) of berries, according to the Commission’s National Berry Report.
