Nearly 50 tonnes of oranges from northern Taiwan's Hsinchu county were shipped to the Philippines for the first time ever last week in a bid to ease a glut that has driven domestic sale prices down to farm-gate levels, reports etaiwannews.com.
The exports were made possible by the actions of a “trading company”, which bought the 50 tonnes of Haili oranges from Hsinchu farmers without regard for profits, the article said.
The domestic retail price of Taiwan’s Haili oranges has fallen from NT$30 to NT$10 per 500g in recent weeks, despite government efforts to boost demand through promotions, etaiwannews.com said.
Hsinchu County is the largest Haili orange producing area in Taiwan, with some 1,400ha devoted to the variety.
