Peru’s port facilities must be improved in order to bolster the country’s infrastructure and export position on the global market, according to José Luis Silva Martinot, chairman of the Peruvian Exporters’ Association (ADEX).

Mr Silva said the lack of adequate infrastructure and higher costs are damaging the competitiveness of Peru’s exports.

“There is an important deficit in the logistics infrastructure at Peruvian ports, which makes us 6,000km further away than any other country in the region, and as a result means our exports are less competitive,” Mr Silva explained.

Port facilities in northern Peru and the country’s Amazon region need to be overhauled in order to boost the quality of service, offer better prices for exports and generate more employment.
