US-based convenience store chain 7-Eleven is planning to enter the Indonesian market via a franchise agreement with PT Modern Putraindonesia in Jakarta.

The agreement will make Indonesia 7-Eleven's 12th market in Asia, reported Foodweek.

The new franchise stores will be opened beginning this year in both newly-built locations and in some of Modern Putraindonesia’s existing locations in Jakarta.

Modern Putraindonesia plans to focus the convenience stores on commercial and office areas of the Indonesian capital, and will consider opening stores in other large cities such as Bandung, Semarang or Surabaya in the future.

The company will inherit 7-Eleven's trademark brands as well as immediately consumable fresh foods tailored for the Indonesian market.

The new chain will have to compete with already-established local convenience chains like Indomaret.
