Following the retirement of Asda's Stephen Ridge, international certification standards body GlobalGAP has announced the election of Jorge Hernandez to its board.

According to the organisation, Mr Hernandez brings a wealth of food safety experience to the board, havingworked both in the public and private sector in the US.

In welcoming Mr Hernandez to the board, GlobalGAP chairman Nigel Garbutt said: 'I would also like to take this opportunity to thankStephen for his very significant contribution to GlobalGAP over manyyears and particularly as a board member for the last three years.'

Jorge Hernandez is senior vice-president for food safety and quality assurance for US Foodservice, based in Chicago, US and hasresponsibility for a 'farm to fork' approach to ensuring compliance withall food safety regulatory standards.

Mr Hernandez was previously vice-president for food safety and risk management at the NationalRestaurant Association and has also worked for the Illinois Department ofPublic Health.

He is a registered sanitarian, a former FDA standardisation officer, amember of the Center for Diseases Control-Environmental HealthCommittee, the Global Food Safety Initiative- Technical Committee, theAmerican National Standards Institute Accreditation Committee, theConference for Food Protection and the National Restaurant AssociationQuality Assurance Executives Study Group, as well as serving on the boardof the Produce Marketing Association.
