Tesco Express China

Counterfeit supermarkets have been popping up in Shanghai, according to local media reports; a new step for China’s traditional problems with faked brands.

A fake Tesco outlet was opened in Shanghai’s Jiading Disctrict last year by a man named Jin, complete with Tesco bags, uniforms, signs and receipts, according to the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau.

Officials closed the store down and fined the owner 100,000 yuan (US$14,650), reported the Shanghai Daily.

A number of other stores named Century Hualian, an appropriation of two local supermarket brands, Century Lianhua and Hualian, were discovered in the city’s suburbs.

The Century Hualian stores had similar branding and decorations to both copied chains.

Officials from the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau are apparently cracking down on counterfeits in the run-up to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
