The record-breaking campaign has been buoyed by increases in Navel and Valencia production, said the CGA

Over 90m cartons of South African citrus have been exported this season, in what has been a record breaking year for the country’s growers and exporters.

South African Citrus Growers Association CEO Justin Chadwick told Eurofruit Magazine that this year’s export volume had increased by 18m cartons compared with 2006’s figures, with the crop distributed evenly between all markets.

Mr Chadwick explained that the majority of the extra fruit had come from an increase in Navel and Valencia production, although he warned that the boom could lead to the last 3m cartons of citrus sold running into the new Northern Hemisphere season.
