Talks between Taiwan and China on cross-strait economic exchanges and cooperation have given Taiwanese fruit and vegetable traders something to smile about.

Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council Wang Yi announced on the weekend major procurement plans to buy Taiwanese fruit and vegetables this year, reported Taiwan News.

He also encourages Chinese firms to invest in Taiwan, and Taiwanese businesses to explore China’s domestic market. Chinese tourists will also be encouraged to visit Taiwan, with a target of over 600,000 next year.

Four more exclusive areas in four provinces will be opened for Taiwanese farmers for Chinese production as well, increasing the number of “Taiwanese farms in China” to 15, Mr Wang said.

Five more ports have also been opened to shipping direct from Taiwan.

Mr Wang stated that China hopes to begin negotiations with Taiwan on the signing of an economic cooperation framework agreement.
