Organic production has been getting increased attention from China’s government in recent weeks, which has now said it expects the country to become the fourth largest global consumer of organics in the next 10 years.

Chinese exports will also account for 5 per cent of the global organic food trade, according to a report by the People’s Daily.

Organic food is expected to make up 1-1.5 per cent of China’s food market, the report said, with organic farmland and production to grow annually by 20-30 per cent for the next decade.

According to Ma Aiguo, director general of the Agricultural Product Quality Safety Supervision Bureau under China’s Ministry of Agriculture, China will increase support for the organic sector.

One sign of this was the third China International Organic Trade Fair and Conference held last week in Shanghai.

Worldwide the organic market is experiencing good growth, although that has been stemmed by the global recession.
