Research undertaken by groups studying the possible benefits of so-called superfruits could open up the possibilities of similar studies into the potential of super vegetables.

That was the verdict of Karl Crawford of NZ Plant and Food Research, who told AP-Food Technology that the merger between two of New Zealand's leading agricultural research bodies – HortResearch and Crop & Food Research – has created the potential for transferring knowledge from fruits to vegetables.

The idea of super veggies has been muted before, but would require a focus on stringent research and marketing to attract consumers to the products, according to professor Jeya Henry of Oxford Brookes University in the UK.

He told Food Navigator earlier this year that research was taking place into certain vegetable categories, but a 'wider social push' would be needed to make the products seem appealing and exciting.
