Vietnam needs new high-quality fruit varieties to boost the export industry, according to a call from the country’s president Nguyen Minh Triet.

On a visit to the Southern Fruit Research Institute (SOFRI) in Tien Giang Province last Thursday the president said breeding should be focused on market demand.

“To meet all these targets, the Institute should focus on human resource development and improve their staff skills to meet international standards for global integration,” he told local media.

SOFRI is one of Vietnam’s leading horticultural research bodies, and has bred a number of fruit strains aimed at production in the country’s southern regions as well as encouraging local farmers to get international certifications such as GlobalGAP and HACCP.

The president was also reportedly displeased with the level of trademark promotion, pointing out that many popular domestic brands did not reach outside Vietnam, such as Hoa Loc mangoes, Ri6 durian and Nam Roi pomelos.
