French retail giant Carrefour has announced it will source more locally grown produce for its four supermarkets in the western Chinese city of Chongqing.

Local produce currently makes up around 30 per cent of the company’s fresh produce offering in its Chongqing outlets, worth about Yn40m (US$5.86m).

CEO of Carrefour China Eric Legros said that figure will increase to 60 per cent in 2010, worth Yn100m (US$14.65m), reported ChinaCSR.

Mr Legros said the retailer will source produce from local small and medium-sized growers, and in return offer training in agricultural technologies, fertilisation and food security.

Carrefour’s four Chongqing outlets will be joined by a fifth this October and a sixth next year.
