Glasshouse technology is gaining in popularity with farmers from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The structures give farmers greater control over growing conditions and offer protection from extreme temperatures, storms and pests.

Vivekanandan, a tomato farmer from Coimbatore, told Asian News International the technology allowed him to harvest four times more produce per acre.

“We have been farming for the past 30 years and we do tomato cultivation in an open field. We would get yields of 25-30 tonnes per acre of land,” he said.

“With this technology, we have got a yield of 25 tonnes in just a quarter acre of land. Moreover, now I am also planning to extend this system to my other areas of land.”

As well as tomatoes, farmers are now growing crops like capsicum, chilli, onion, and other vegetables by using the technique.
