Peru's National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) expects Japan to lift its phytosanitary restrictions on Peruvian mangoes during the first quarter of 2010.
The barriers were in place because of fears the fruit may have been contaminated with fruit fly, Living In Peru.com reported.
Efforts to gain market access to Japan for Peruvian mangoes began in 2006, according to Senasa.
'We have achieved an important advance, and we have agreed on the majority of the points,' said Senasa head Oscar Dominguez.
In January 2009 a technical team from Japan visited Peru to verify the effectiveness of hydrothermal treatment on mangoes to prevent fruit fly.
The first export campaign to benefit from the development would be 2010/11.
Mr Dominguez said Senasa was now working hard to gain Japanese market access for Peruvian table grapes.
