French retail chain Carrefour plans to open six to eight supermarkets and a hypermarket in suburban Singapore over the next three years.

The company will invest more than US$84m in the project and the stores will be located in the northern and western areas of the country, Meat Trade News Daily reported.

Meanwhile in China Carrefour has just introduced 33 free shuttle bus services on 10 routes in the coastal city of Xiamen, in Fujian Province.

The company will open its second store in the city this year and it is expected to be situated outside Xiamen Island, What's On Xiamen reported.

Carrefour opened 24 new stores in the second half of 2009 to bring its total number of outlets in China to 148.

The firm has introduced the bus services to cope with the planned expansion, and it is reported that the investment could cost Carrefour around Yn400m per year.
