Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) will introduce a peak season surcharge on all shipments from Asia to Europe from 1 February, the Journal of Commerce reported.

The Hong Kong-based shipping company will add US$200 per 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) on all westbound shipments from Asia, except from Japan, to northern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

OOCL said the charge was a response to the recent surge in cargo activity throughout the market.

The company raised rates by US$100 per TEU on eastbound shipping between Europe and Asia from 1 November last year.
