This year will see the introduction of the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA), essentially a free trade agreement between the two nations.

The agreement will allow more than 800 farm and seafood products to enter Japan with no tariffs, meaning big opportunities for Vietnamese agriculture.

According to the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, high hopes are held for increased exports of bananas, pineapples and mangoes, Vietnam Net reported.

Le Quang Lan, deputy director of the Multilateral Trade Policies Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade said it was crucial that Vietnam's export produce met Japan's high requirements on quality and food safety.

Mr Lan also said the sharp reductions in tariffs on farm produce could help Vietnamese businesses be more competitive with Japan's other suppliers.

Under the VJEPA, Japan has committed to cut tariffs on products that make up nearly 84 per cent of the total value of Vietnam's agricultural exports.
