Organics

Indian farming collective Organic India has now begun setting up its own chain of exclusive retail stores.

The company has already opened a store in Maharashtra and is looking to open six more by the end of March, in Delhi, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Nagpur and Lucknow.

Organic India managing director and CEO Krishan Guptaa said the company had also expanded its product range. Up until now the company only exported organically grown herbs, but has diversified to include organically grown grains and fruits.

"With this we hope to achieve the milestone of Rs1bn (US$21.6m) turnover in the next fiscal year. There is a huge market abroad for organically grown fruits, vegetables and foodgrains," Mr Guptaa told India's Economic Times.

"We have already established a presence abroad through our branded organic herbs and medicines. With the introduction of organically grown fruits and foodgrains we hope to grow rapidly in the years to come."

The Lucknow-based company is also participating in BioFach 2010, the annual trade fair of organic food in Nuremberg, Germany, later this month.
