APL container ship

Singapore-based container shipping line APL has announced plans for a general rate increase for its Intra-Asia trade, Transport Intelligence reported.

The proposed increases will affect all trade from East Asia to India and Pakistan. The rises will be US$100 per twenty-foot container and US$200 per forty-foot container, effective from 1 March.

The company said operating conditions in the intra-Asia trade remained highly challenging, with current freight rates at unsustainably low levels.

APL believes the hikes are essential to sustain its service and to maintain the high level of reliability its customers demand.
