New Zealand fruit marketer Turners & Growers has had a positive response from those who sampled its new red kiwifruit variety at the recent Fruit Logistica trade fair in Berlin.

The company said around 1000 people tasted the fruit, which is gold with a red centre, Radio New Zealand reported.

Turners&Growers have been growing the fruit in China because it's prevented from producing it in New Zealand for export, under laws that allow Zespri, a rival company, to control the country's kiwifruit marketing.

Managing director Jeff Wesley said the variety was bred to have a better shelf life than gold kiwifruit, a variety worth around NZ$250m (US$172.7m) annually, and he believes that red kiwifruit could eventually match the gold variety for earning power.

Mr Wesley said his company was currently growing around 20,000 tonnes of the variety in China for export to Europe and the US.
