The increased value of the Australian dollar is offsetting any potential gains growers stood to make from the higher price of the commodity this season.
A global shortage of onions has inflated the price, but the exchange rate means growers aren't reaping the full reward.
The Australian island state of Tasmania is currently shipping onions to Europe and Asia to fill the annual three-month supply gap.
John Hoskin from Field Fresh Tasmania, Australia's largest onion exporter, told the ABC his company will ship around 40,000 tonnes this year.
'I can't hide the fact that the price is encouraging this year, it's been very good, and demand continues to grow and price seems nearly daily to be heading upwards,' Mr Hoskin said.
'Although, a lot of the upside is being taken away from us as a business and probably the industry as a whole, given the very, very strong Australian dollar negates most, if not all, of that upside in pricing at the moment.'
