Mangoes

The Peruvian Exporters’ Association (ADEX) has reported a 46 per cent jump in national mango export volumes during the January-April period of 2008.

Sales of the fruit in the first quarter of the year reached some US$60m, a significant increase on the US$41m recorded during the same period last year.

Fresh and dried mangoes and mangosteen accounted for 93 percent of overseas sales, with the balance represented by the prepared and conserved category.

The bulk of Peru’s fresh and dried mango and mangosteen exports are destined for the US, which during the January-April period represented 42 per cent of export sales, worth US$23m.

The Netherlands is the second-largest export destination for Peruvian mangoes and mangosteen, receiving 38 per ecnt of the crop, worth US$21m.

The UK, Canada, Spain, France, New Zealand, Belgium, Chile, Argentina and Chile are also regular importers of the fruits.
