Pakistan mangoes in box

Pakistani mangoes have finally gained US market access with the US Federal Register set to make the announcement next week, Dawn.com has reported.

Pakistan federal minister for food and agriculture Nazar Mohammad Gondal said the decision was a major breakthrough in Pakistani exports.

Mr Gondal said the news would be a boost for the country's mango growing areas, especially in Punjab.

The US is the world's largest importer of mangoes, accounting for almost half of total imports of the fruit, while Pakistan is the second largest exporter, shipping to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, UK, Bahrain, Singapore and others.

Meanwhile, the third meeting of the Pakistan/US strategic dialogue in agriculture finished in Islamabad on Tuesday, with a resolve for the countries to work together to improve and update Pakistan's agricultural sector.

A press release said the talks agreed to strengthen collaborative research between Pakistan and the US.
