Indonesia’s retail sector is expecting a big boost in the run-up to Idul Fitri (Lebaran/Eid) from holiday sales, with an overall rise for the year of about 17.6 per cent forecast.

“For 2010, we predict the total market size for the modern retail markets will grow…from Rp85 trillion `US$9.44bn` in revenue last year to about Rp100 trillion this year,” said Rudi Sumampouw, secretary general of the Association of Indonesian Retailers (Aprindo), reported the Jakarta Globe.

Spending over the Islamic Idul Fitri holiday would boost second-half modern retail revenue to Rp65 trillion, up from the first half’s Rp35 trillion, said Mr Sumampouw.

The majority of modern retail format sales come from ‘specialty stores’ such as bookstores and pharmacies, according to Aprindo data.

Minimarkets like Indomart and Alfamart expected to see revenues grow from Rp5 trillion in 2009 to Rp7 trillion this year, the Jakarta Globe report said.

Hypermarkets like Hypermart and Carrefour could see revenues rise from last year’s Rp3 trillion to Rp4 trillion this year, while supermarkets like Hero may see total revenues this year hit Rp5 trillion, up from last year's Rp4.2 trillion.

Department stores like Matahari would see revenues go from Rp2.8 trillion last year to Rp4 trillion in 2010, according to Aprindo.
