Taiwan typhoon

Taiwan's Council of Agriculture have pegged total agricultural losses at around NT$109.8m following last weekend's typhoon.

Typhoon Fanapi hit Taiwan on Sunday causing crop damage in the region of NT$93.5m, the Council told Taiwan Today, destroying 20 per cent of crops over 2,149ha.

Hualien in eastern Taiwan was worst hit by the storm, which pounded Taiwan with strong winds and heavy rain causing flooding.

The Council said crop losses in Hualien had already surpassed the minimum required for farmers to qualify for low-interest loans according to the Agricultural Natural Disaster Relief Regulations.

The typhoon left Taiwan on Monday, but meteorologists warned of continued heavy rain in mountainous regions.
