onions generic

The Indian government has increased the minimum export price of onions by US$150 per tonne to discourage exports and ease demand for the commodity as rains affect supply.

A spokesperson for the National Agricultural Federation of India told the Times of India post-monsoon rains have hampered onion production in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, increasing demand and pushing up prices in the country’s largest onion market in Nashik.

In accordance with regulations stipulated by the World Trade Organisation India cannot enforce an all-out ban on exports of the commodity, the newspaper reported.
