Low volumes of table grapes have finally begun to arrive in markets in Nashik after unseasonal rains badly affected growing conditions in the region often referred to as the Wine Capital of India.
Indian newspaper the Business Standard reported that grape arrivals in the city are down 25 per cent on the same period last year.
As well as volumes being down, so is fruit quality, with the newspaper reporting low sugar levels in the grapes.
On Thursday of last week grapes were fetching US$1 per/kg at the Nashik Agriculture Produce Market Committee.
Volumes are expected to pick up by the middle of January, the paper reported.
